Supporting Women in Jazz | Stream Stand Season 1

In Stream Stand Season 1, we had the pleasure of following four amazing women making waves in the jazz scene. Each individual artist tells their story, giving insight on what makes them the musicians they are today. They all provide their hopes and dreams for the future each paving the way for the next generation of women in jazz.

 

A special thank you to everyone who donated to Season 1 as we were able to award each of these lovely musicians a modest stipend for COVID-19 Relief. 

Arta JÄ“kabsone | Stream Stand Season 1, Ep. 1

New York City-based Latvian singer, composer, and arranger Arta JÄ“kabsone is recognized for her velvety tone. Arta engages listeners with an emotional, honest, adventurous, and joyful expression of music. Her musical horizons start with simple Latvian folk song melodies, harmonies, and structures yet can reach something more complex— closer to the world of improvisation. The unifying element is the storytelling.

​

She was awarded 1st prize at the prestigious Montreux Shure Jazz Voice Competition in Switzerland (2016), 2nd prize at Mid–Atlantic Jazz Voice competition (2017), and 3rd prize at Ella Fitzgerald International Vocal Competition (2019). In 2017, she released her debut album Light. Since then, she has collaborated with various artists on projects including Edgars CÄ«rulis International Group’s Aisma and Yesterday Still Lies Between the Floorboards, a duo album with Erik Leuthauser. She has performed at various international Jazz Festivals: Montreux Jazz Festival 2017, Enjoy Jazz Festival 2018, Nikolaisaal Potsdam Festival 2020. Her original music project Reflections was nominated for the Latvian Annual Concert 2019. JÄ“kabsone has presented her original works at the most imaginatively booked jazz club in New York: The Jazz Gallery.

In recent years Arta JÄ“kabsone has shown her passion for composition. She has collaborated with the arts education organization Art Beyond the Ink, creating a theme for their online educational videos. As well as her composition Gratitude has been included in the Art Beyond the Ink music workbook.
In 2020 alongside composer and pianist Edgars CÄ«rulis she collaborated with Orchestra RÄ«ga, creating a musical suite called Winter Portraits, which will be premiered in December 2021 in Latvia, RÄ«ga VEF concert hall. JÄ“kabsone is in a process of composing songs for the RDKS Gospel Choir conducted by Una Stade, which will be premiered later in the year 2021.
Currently, JÄ“kabsone is working on her 3rd original bilingual and multidisciplinary performance called Letters to Home, which will soon be presented at The Jazz Gallery.

June McDoom | Stream Stand Season 1, Ep. 2

Alyssa Mcdoom aka "June" is a musician and singer-songwriter based in New York City. Growing up in South Florida and raised by a large Jamaican family, she unexpectedly found a love for folk music in her teens and started writing and singing songs out of that inspiration.

 

She is currently wrapping up her debut project, which will be released in 2021 under her artist name June. With her music, she hopes to inspire Black girls to create whatever they dream of.

Morgan Walbridge | Stream Stand Season 1 Ep. 3

Morgan Walbridge is a professional musician and composer based in Philadelphia, PA.

​

She performs her own original music for solo vibraphone and frequently collaborates with other local musicians in ensembles of all sizes. 

Morgan is also a freelance session musician, offering recordings from her own home studio.
 

Morgan considers the vibraphone to be her primary instrument.

However, she began her music career as a drum-set player and percussionist, performing in various small groups and pit orchestras at the age of 14 in her hometown, Rochester, NY.

​

Morgan has a wide range of musical influences including jazz, fusion, rock, R&B, and pop.

 

In 2020, Morgan completed a

B.A. in Instrumental Performance

from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.

 

She currently offers private instruction in Mallet Percussion, Drum-Set & Percussion, Composition, and Music Theory. Morgan also offers services in music transcription.

Gabrielle Garo | Stream Stand Season 1, Ep. 4

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Gabrielle Garo’ is a multi-instrumentalist, playing the flute, piccolo, alto, tenor, soprano saxophone, and bass clarinet. She is the 2015 International Women in Jazz Youth in Action Winner, an ambassador for the 2018 Latin Grammy Awards, a Trophy Presenter in the 2019 Latin Grammy Awards, and a featured artist on the Grammy-nominated album, “West Side Story Reimagined,” with the Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band.

 

Gabrielle is a scholarship recipient of the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation and has been presented with the, 2019 Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame’s Deacon Leroy Applin Young Lioness Award, amongst various other awards. She has been accepted into the National Junior Honor Society, The National Honor Society for Dance Arts, and has participated in the world record-breaking event for the largest flute ensemble.

 

Performing locally and internationally, Gabrielle has joined the Grammy-winning Christian McBride Big Band on their first European tour and has also performed with music greats, such as Eddie Palmieri, Esperanza Spalding, and Arturo O’Farrill.

 

She is featured in Spike Lee’s Season 2 of “She’s Gotta Have It,” has performed for T.I. and as a requested backdrop in promotion for his album and movie release, and opened, The 62nd GRAMMY Awards, with Grammy winner, Lizzo, amongst various other TV appearances.

 

Recently, Gabrielle is a graduate of The New School, where she has obtained her Undergraduate Degree in Jazz Performance (‘19), and Master’s Degree in Arts Management & Entrepreneurship (‘20).
